The Magellan 315 is designed strictly for outdoor use and will be of little use if you are looking for a car navigation unit as it does not display road maps or have any of the other feature needed for vehicular use.

It will also accept and store up to 20 routes and 500 user-input waypoints while keeping track of your exact location within 15 meters or less. The trip-odometer also shows how far you have traveled while leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that makes it easy to back-track your route without getting lost.

The unit runs on two AA batteries that will give over 12 hours of continuous use with one caveat; The 315 comes with two levels of backlighting which can come in handy if your out in the dark but it will also drain the batteries rather quickly. It is best to leave this feature turned of to get maximum battery life. It also incorporates a 10 year lithium battery that used to keep stored data when the unit is turned off.

The GPS 315 incorporates a number of data screens that can all be accessed through a set of simple controls. It features a graphical compass that points to your current direction of travel while keeping the bearing to your next way point simultaneously. There are nine graphic navigation screens that will show you heading, bearing, speed, direction, ETA, and your exact position in a number or formats, including longitude/latitude, Universal Transverse Mercator, Military Grid and Ordnance Survey of Britain Conversion. These data screens can be customized, letting you create data pages showing information that is most important to you.

The Magellan GPS 315 also has some optional features that will further increase what you are able to do with it. With the optional PC cable you can interface with your laptop/home computer to upload data such as topo maps.
